Dies Conmemoratius ENG

From the Environmental Education Department in the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta, we wish to celebrate the 26th of January, which is the World Day of Environmental Education.

The main purpose on this day consists of identifying, both globally and locally, the environmental issue so as to raise conciousness among citizens in order to get them involved to preserve and protect our environment. As a consequence, we will be able to reduce the differnt levels of the climate change impact.

26th JANUARY, WORLD DAY OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Today, 26th January, is the World Day of Environmental Education so the environmental education team from the Mancomunitat de la Ribera Alta is delighted to celebrate it with you. Its origins date back to 1975 when the International Seminar on Environmental Education was held in Belgrade. There, the United Nations expressed the need for people and governments to become aware of environmental issues and to take action in order to preserve and protect the environment. That’s why environmental education has gained strength over the years since it raises public awareness through education and, most important, it enables people to change to more sustainable habits. For this reason, the environmental education team would like to thank you for the effort you are making to achieve a better environment.

Next, we present a video which shows all the environmental activities we have been carrying out this year with your cooperation.

Once again: thank you so much! And remember: the best waste is the one which is not generated!

17th MAY – WORLD RECYCLING DAY

Today we celebrate the World Recycling Day. It was declared by Unesco and is a date which invites us to reflect on waste and on how important its management is. Waste can become a resource as long as we recover it through recycling. Every time we recycle, we contribute to the improvement of our natural environment because we avoid the cumulation of waste and we extend its useful life. At the same time, we save on natural resources, raw materials and energy, and we reduce CO2 emissions responsible of climate change.

20th MAY, WORLD BEES DAY

In 2017 the UN declared the 20th May as the World Bees Day. The main objective of this day is to take conscience on the importance of preserving bees and other pollinators for the maintenance of all humanity.

Bees play a really important role in terms of food security, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, climate change, etc… The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that 71% of all species cultivated for human consumption depend on pollinators.

During the last years, bees have been threatened by a lack of natural habitats as well as by a higher exposure to chemical substances. As a consequence, the population of these pollinators have reduced considerably by a 20% mortality rate in Europe.

24TH MAY, EUROPEAN DAY OF NATURAL PARKS

The EUROPARC Federation, a European organization created in 1973, brings together institutions dedicated to the conservation of nature and Protected Natural Areas from 38 countries. It promotes the celebration of the European Day of Natural Parks every year on 24th May and it commemorates the declaration of the first national parks in Europe on the 24th May 1909 in Sweden. There exist 1,835 Protected Natural Areas in Spain and, specifically in the Valencian Community, there are 22 Natural Parks.

Natural Parks provide many environmental and social benefits, such as the protection of river banks, the capture of greenhouse gases and the improvement of the air quality. These sceneries allow us to carry out different sport activities as well as being meeting points among families and friends.

ENJOYING NATURE IS OPTIONAL, BUT RESPECTING IT IS COMPULSORY.
